Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)

Attention-deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a frequently cited psychological disorder among child and adolescent-aged populations (Rappley, 2005). A number of researchers have suggested that ADHD is frequently misidentified and that high energy and difficulties resisting distraction is often a normal thing in children and not something that necessarily should be identified as pathological (Sclutto & Eisenberg, 2007; LeFever & Arcona, 2003). Many of these same researchers state that the over-diagnosis of ADHD has led to huge increases in the misuse of psycho-stimulant medications (LeFever & Arcona, 2003). Considering the potential negative side effects of stimulant medications (as discussed in last module’s lecture), the misuse of these medications is a serious concern.
