Offer Documentation to Debunk Pseudoscience

There are many concepts addressed in this week’s readings that demonstrate falsified science or that are no longer considered to be valid scientific principles.

1)Read text (topic) below from Race:

In the early 20th century, the field of physical anthropology emerged, largely as the study of racial types and differences (Blakey 1987; Armelagos and Goodman 1998; Marks 2010). Yet, some leaders in the discipline countered mainstream ideas about race. Among the latter was Franz Boas, considered by many to be the founder of modern American anthropology. In 1912, Boas reported significant changes in cranial shape and size between Jewish and Sicilian immigrants and their United States-born children. Boas’s results revealed that cranial development was responsive to environmental conditions, discrediting the notion of stable racial “types” defined by heritable racial traits. With craniometric studies under attack, psychologists and other scientists began to base their arguments for race-based intelligence on the results of intelligence quotient (IQ) tests. In the United States, IQ tests were heavily culturally biased and used to justify discrimination against southern and eastern Europeans in immigration policy as well as racial segregation in public education.

2)Next, find an article on the internet or a book on your chosen topic.

3)Introduce your topic (using class readings) and utilize your outside research to demonstrate its role in pseudoscience.

4)Page requirement + proper citations. At least one full page (not including titles, name, and citations), double-spaced, 12-point Times New Roman font, and 1-inch margin.
