Discussion questions
Read Chapter 10 in our textbook (SWC, 2013) and complete the tasks. Use this DB to jump-start your research for the upcoming analytical paper (due November 13).
TASK #1. Review the phases of the policy process described in our textbook (SWC, 2013): policy issue (formulation), approval, implementation, feedback. Would you say that your topic has made it to the policy agenda? Is it a “policy issue”? Has a clear policy been formulated or is there still a debate about what should be done? Do any of the other phases of the policy process apply to your topic? Explain.
TASK #2. What, if any, role has Congress played with regard to your chosen topic? Are specific members of Congress (representatives or senators) involved? Have any Congressional committees played a role?
TASK #3. Is the President focused on your topic? If so, what has he done about it? What about the rest of the national security establishment? Is secrecy needed with regard to your topic?
TASK #4. Are foreign governments or nonstate actors involved with your topic? Explain.
