Philosophy 231: Business Ethics Writing Assignment #4 Submission instructions: Upload the complete assignment to D2L under Assessments > Assignments > Writing Assignment #1. The Assignment: For this assignment, you will write a refutation of one of the articles from Module 4. Your paper should be no more than 1000 words. A refutation is a paper that accomplishes two important goals: 1) It clearly explains the main claims being made by the author that you chose to discuss. 2) It includes a detailed, clear argument in favor of the claim that the author in question is wrong. Grading rubric (Total of 30 points): 5 points for having a clear thesis statement near the beginning of the paper. A thesis statement is a statement that explains to your reader exactly what you will be arguing. You should have one such statement early in the paper. Here are some sample thesis statements (note that these are just examples, and you do not need to use any of these specific thesis statements): o “In this paper, I am going to argue that Carr’s view on bluffing in business is badly mistaken.” o “I argue that Bowie’s objections to Carr’s view are unpersuasive, and should not deter us from accepting Carr’s view.” o “I am going to demonstrate that Desjardins & Duska’s objections to drug testing should not convince us that drug testing is morally wrong.” 10 points for clearly and accurately explaining the author you will be discussing. Before you begin your argument, you need to be sure that you clearly and accurately explain the view of the author you will be refuting. You should aim to use approximately half of the allotted space (~500 words) doing this. You will lose points on this if: o Your mischaracterize the view of the author you are discussing. o You leave out important details. o You fail to include quotations and references to specific pages within the reading. 10 points for providing an interesting, original, and thoughtful refutation of the paper you have chosen. You should plan to spend the remaining ~500 words constructing a well-reasoned argument against the paper you have chosen. You will lose points if: o Your argument relies on a mischaracterization of the author in question. o Your argument is not sufficiently original. o Your argument is not sufficiently detailed. o Your argument is open to obvious counter-examppoints the clarity, structure, and format of the paper. You will lose points if: o Your paper is unclear. o Your paper is poorly formatted. o Your paper is poorly structured. o Your paper contains many grammatical or spelling errors.
