To participate in this topic, first read this excerpt from “The Semplica-Girl Diaries” by George Saunders (pp. 683–689 of 100 Years of The Best American Short Stories). Take notes as you read, paying particular attention to voice.
In our textbook reading this week, Dufresne says, “The choice of narrative voice and point of view—who is speaking (and how) and through whose consciousness and emotional focus is the story understood?—will affect every other choice the writer makes in the story” (221).
In what way does Saunders’ use of voice and point of view affect the telling of this story? How much is being revealed at one time and how? What did you learn from Saunders’ piece and how can you apply these methods or strategies to your own writing?
