The paradigm shift from behaviorism, which was founded by John B. Watson, was an approach to psychology which emphasized the study of observable and measurable behavior (Goldstein, 2019). Although behaviorism appeared to graft well to interpretation for certain categories of learning, however, according to Sternberg (2017) behaviorism did not account as well for intricate psychological events such as language learning and critical thinking (Sternberg, 2017). The behaviorist paradigm did not allow any consideration of the mind’s role in creating behavior (Goldstein, 2019).

More understanding of behavior and what was going on inside to manifest these behaviors were what some psychologist wanted to know. The cognitive approach provided a new way to look at behavior (Goldstein, 2019). In the early 1950s, the “cognitive revolution” took place in response to behaviorism. Cognitivism is the belief that most human behavior explains how people think (Sternberg, 2017). According to Sternberg (2017) cognitivism is a synthesis of earlier forms of analysis like behaviorism and Gestaltism with similarities in how the two adopt precise quantitative analysis to study how we learn and think, behaviorism and the emphasis on internal mental processes, Gestaltism. (Sternberg, 2017). So, in the 1950s the new cognitive paradigm began to emerge (Goldstein, 2019).

Both Behaviorism and Cognitivism are noteworthy suggestions for seeing learning and education. Behaviorism is the study of that human behavior can be explained in terms of conditioning, without the call of thoughts or feelings and can be treated by changing behavior patterns. Behaviorism was created by John Watson. (Goldstein, 2019).

Cognitive theory came as a response to behaviorism. Cognitive theory is the study of mental processes through the scientific method and concepts from behavior. It uses process and data managing as the main comparison to explain findings. (Goldstein, 2019).

They differ as Behaviorism concentrates on subjects as animals and sees behavior as being incapable of being the aftermath of environmental stimuli. Where Cognitivism concentrates on human subjects, see behavior as a point to extract the mental processes behind behavior. They are similar as they both us techniques as a basic acceptance. They see human action and mental as decided by physical resolution. (Goldstein, 2019).

Cognitive psychology has come a long way since its inception in the 1950s and 60s but it has not overthrown behaviorism. Many situations are pertinent to the practice of behaviorism. For example, behavior of children or animals can be regulated and possibly changed with positive reinforcements. Behaviorism is used to treat people suffering with phobias and people who struggle with addiction by handing out tokens or coins when milestones of sobriety are achieved. The Lovaas Approach is a treatment for children with developmental delays and autism. The child is rewarded for learning basic skills, which vary with each child. (“What is the Lovaas Approach?”, 2019). Programs involving emotional development and education are two more components of the Lovaas Approach. The outcome for the children involved in these interventions is very positive, with many children evolving to social levels of their peers and performing average schoolwork in a regular classroom (“What is the Lovaas Approach?”, 2019).

Cognitive psychology is the studying of the mind, its processes, and how it functions. Behaviorism is the process of observing behavior to gain data. (Goldstein, 2019).

Behaviorism is still here and will not be taken away. We use behavior analyses to get rid of phobias, token economy, which is to increase good behavior and decrease poor behavior with the use of tokens, and also it is used to decrease difficult behaviors and increasing favorable behavior by carefully giving and not giving reinforcements. (Roediger, 2004).
