For a twenty-four hour period, adopt the aversion therapies described by Epictetus in the Enchiridion and in Chapter 4 of the course textbook Philosophy of Human Nature. Do the opposite of what you want to do, and don’t do the things that you wish to do. The objective here is to divide your will (the faculty of choice) from your desire, to show you that you can indeed operate your life independently, and even against, your desires. In this brief essay, describe what you did, how it went, and what—if anything—you learned from the exercise. Note that none of these instructions permit you to violate any legal or ethical duties (even if you wish to observe them), so it is not permissible to speed down the highway (when normally you’d observe the law) or to be nasty to your boyfriend (when normally you are a kindly person).
