What about Bob? Case study

This is what I have so far. I only need help with the Alternative Diagnosis. I was to watch the movie What about Bob and write a paper with this template. The source to be used are below along with the DSM-5

Alternative Diagnosis

Other possible mental disorders

  • Obsessive-compulsive Disorder
  • Borderline Personality Disorder
  • Agoraphobia
  • Anxiety
  • Discuss the symptoms of each disorder above that he displayed.
  • Explain why the other disorders were dismissed based upon the symptoms that he displayed that fit in with Dependent Personality Disorder.

Introduction

Thesis- Bob Wiley is an individual who suffers from psychological disorders that causes him to follow his psychiatrist on vacation.

Dependent Personality Disorder

The movie we watched is called What About Bob? The movie is about a character named Bob Wiley, who is a divorced middle aged male. Bob suffers from several psychological and abnormal behaviors such as dependent personality disorder, agoraphobia, and obsessive compulsive disorder. Dependent personality disorder is pervasive psychological dependence on other individuals. Someone who suffers with DPD has a difficult time making decisions without constant reassurance from other people. DPD can also make an individual feel uncomfortable and helpless when they are by themselves. Other symptoms can be when the individual goes through desperate measures to obtain and keep a friendship or have fears of being abandoned. Sometimes the individual may also develop separation anxiety when suffering with DPD and will do everything they can to stay by someone’s side.

Bob’s behavior abnormal

Abnormal behavior are actions displayed by an individual that are looked at negatively because they are not typical or usual behavior (Durand & Barlow, 2012). However, who is to decide what is deemed normal or abnormal? To help determine this amongst behavior there are differing criteria that need to be met. These criteria are:

Psychological dysfunction in other words can a person cope with the demands of everyday life? It is defined as a breakdown of cognitive, emotional, and behavioral functioning (Durand & Barlow, 2012). This may mean can a person keep a job, complete activities of daily living, communicate properly, etc.

Personal distress. This one is a hard to completely determine if a behavior is abnormal because everyone at some point or another is distressed. But, are the observable behaviors being performed done so under distress (Durand & Barlow, 2012)?

Not culturally expected. This is really more easily viewed by asking the question; Does this go outside the social norms? Or, in other words do the behaviors that are being performed go outside what is culturally and socially accepted in a specific social group a person may be belonging to (McLeod, 2018).

Now, that abnormal behavior has been defined and explained. Here are some of Bob’s abnormal behaviors displayed: he faked his own suicide story to talk to Dr. , impersonates people to talk to his Dr., uses tissues to touch things, has a hard time leaving his house, or getting into places such as elevators and buses, as well as acting like he has tourette syndrome.

DSM Criteria

Bob Wiley’s symptoms best represent Dependent Personality Disorder- a strong need to be cared for by others, including patterns of submissiveness and fear of separation. The DSM-5 lists Dependent Personality Disorder under Cluster C- Anxious or Fearful Disorders of Personality Disorders. The DSM doesn’t rate how dependent an individual is; if they meet the criteria, they are labeled as having dependent personality disorder. According to our text

A pervasive and excessive need to be taken care of that leads to submissive and clinging behavior and fears of separation, beginning by early adulthood and present in a variety of contexts, as indicated by five (or more) of the following:

· (1) has difficulty making everyday decisions without an excessive amount of advice and reassurance from others

· (2) needs others to assume responsibility for most major areas of his or her life

· (3) has difficulty expressing disagreement with others because of fear of loss of support or approval. Note: Do not include realistic fears of retribution.

· (4) has difficulty initiating projects or doing things on his or her own (because of a lack of self-confidence in judgment or abilities rather than a lack of motivation or energy)

· (5) goes to excessive lengths to obtain nurturance and support from others, to the point of volunteering to do things that are unpleasant

· (6) feels uncomfortable or helpless when alone because of exaggerated fears of being unable to care for himself or herself

· (7) urgently seeks another relationship as a source of care and support when a close relationship ends

· (8) is unrealistically preoccupied with fears of being left to take care of himself or herself

(Durand and Barlow, 2012).

Bob displays all of these contexts which explains why the behavior appears to be abnormal.

Criterion #2 (from the DSM)

Our culture understands our ability to identify normal from abnormal behavior by our bodies and environment influence that controls our behavior, thinking, and emotions. Depression, fear, anxiety, and panic attacks identify as abnormal behavior in our culture. Anxiety is a negative mood state and a sense of looking worried and anxious. Anxiety is also closely related to depression (Barlow, 2000). Personal distress when an individual is extremely upset. A Panic attack is an unexpected experience of intense fear or acute discomfort. Having no clue when or where the attack might occur. Abnormal behavior is any behavior that deviates from what is considered normal. The difficult with abnormal behavior is that so many people reluctant to receive treatment.

Conclusion
