my assignment you will need to watch the feature-length documentary “The Rape of Europa.” Last time I checked it was available on Netflix, but I expect it is also available through Amazon.
Read through the questions prior to watching the film so you know what to watch for. Take notes, and then compose thoughtful answers to the questions. The more you show applied knowledge and involvement with the material, the more extra credit points you will earn for the assignment. Approximate total word count: 750 words
Answers are to be typed and turned in with the Second Field Trip assignment at the time of the final exam.

2. What role did art play in Hitler’s master plan? What various actions were taken by the Nazis to achieve these ends?

4. When was the National Gallery of Art in Washington founded? What was the Roberts Commission?
5. Who were the “Monuments Men”? What was their function, and what conditions and challenges did they face?
6. What is the legacy of WWII on the world of art and culture? What has and what has not been resolved?
7. What is your reaction to a film like this? What interested you most? What disturbed you most? How does it change, if it does, your sense of the function and relative importance of art in modern culture?

I am glad to see that you are turning in Extra Credit assignments to help boost your grades in LITR . I wanted to let you know about an issue I noticed with your Rape of Europa assignment submissions. The Extra Credit assignment asked you to watch the documentary film The Rape of Europa and answer questions. I was surprised, therefore, to read your submissions, which addressed material that is not covered in the film. I was also surprised to see academic style book references (author and page) included in your submissions, since the assignment only asked you to respond to the film – not to do any additional research.
I want to make sure that you do the Extra Credit the way it was intended. I am still willing to accept the assignment by December 17 if you can watch the film and answer the questions. The point of doing this isn’t just for extra credit. I think the film covers a lot of important material that may help you see the relationship between art and culture better. The questions that I wanted you to answer are there to help you focus on a few things in the film, but I also ask you to reflect on what you have learned. This is you sharing your own thoughts. I didn’t really see that in the work you submitted, so I want to give that opportunity to you again. I realize that this might seem like “more work,” but I would hope you see it as “more education,” which is a good thing!
