The Old Testament, also known as the Law of Moses, served as the basis of ethics and principles for the people of Israel to abide by which eventually addressed other nations across the world. God separated Israel for his purpose of modeling the rules set forth and for Israel to accept and uphold in return for others to learn from. The Ten Commandments established in the Old Testament still serves as a guidance and a reminder of God’s creation and establishment of laws. The Old Testament was the Lord simply stating that there are rules formed for them in the stoned tablets as a reminder that there will be consequences if those rules are broken. The Holy Bible states “And the Lord said unto Moses, come up to me into the mount, and be there; and I will give thee tables of stone, and a law, and commandments which I have written; that thou mayest teach them” (Exodus 24:12, King James Version). God loves his children now as he did in the times of Moses but was angry and a vengeful God showing less mercy unlike the New Testament. The New Testament shows a more compassionate God of understanding and kindness. Also, some of the practices that were used in the Old Testament is no longer used today such as sacrificial ceremonies and offerings but instead we practice the offering of acceptance of him, good works and loving thy neighbor. Rae (2009) wrote “The church today, however, is not under the civil and ceremonial aspects of the Law of the Old Testament Israel” (pg.30).
