Sexual Identity Development

Sexual Identity Development

Several theories have been advanced concerning the development of lesbian, gay, or bisexual identity. Cass’s theory proposes that sexual identity forms through a series of up to six stages that are also referred to as the coming-out process. Different people proceed through these stages differently, and a person’s perceptions of his or her sexual orientation may shift over time.

Explore the influences on the development of sexual orientation: nature versus nurture, or a combination. In your discussion post, include one of the following:

  • Refer to and integrate ideas presented in the Kelly textbook (Kelly, G. F. (2014). Sexuality today (11th ed.). New York, NY: McGraw-Hill. ISBN: 9780078035470). Cite the textbook at least twice within your discussion.
  • Cite at least one scholarly resource to support your discussion. Do not use Internet Web sites such as Wikipedia.
