The two types of cynicism that law enforcement face, organizational cynicism and work Cynicism. (Doerner, 2012). Organizational cynicism means there is distrust of police administration and its rules and regulations. Work cynicism connotes a feeling of distrust towards the officer’s mandate to serve and protect.

Most people that work at the institution that I am employed at express some form of organizational cynicism. Most of the distrust for the organization stems from policy changes and individuals belief that changes will not occur. Most individuals with cynicism for the organization will leave their position within the first year of employment the institution.

Work cynicism at the institution is fairly common due to employee’s being terminated for various violations of state law. As well as lack of faith that the fallowing shift officer will attend his/her shift that night.

I feel that law enforcement is not different than any other career. If you allow outside forces to affect how you feel about your career or work environment you will never be happy with any career. I try to be a positive influence on new staff members and caution them to surround themselves with other positive employees.

One research team expanded upon Niederhoffer’s notion of police cynicism (O’Conell, Holzman & Armandi, 1986). O’Conell and his associates viewed cynicism as consisting of two dimensions: organizational cynicism and work cynicism. Organizational cynicism means there is a distrust of the police administration and its rules and regulations, with that of a work cynicism connotes a feeling of distrust towards the officer’s mandate to serve and protect. When the researchers examined these two forms of cynicism, they uncovered a pattern similar to Niedhoffer’s development outlook. As officers near the halfway mark of their careers, both organizational and work cynicism increase. This pattern then reverses itself, and both forms of cynicism weaken as retirement draws nearer.

I feel as if being an officer isn’t any different than having any other career. I believe that no one should be able to influence how you feel and look at your job, also no one should be able to tell you that you aren’t any good at what you do. There are many people who will down you in any career you choose, but I believe that no one should come in the way of how much you care about your job or even how much you enjoy it. There are so many opportunities in the world and there isn’t anything in this world stopping anybody from reaching their goals and living their dreams, the only person stopping you is you.
