PSY 101 The States of Consciousness

PSY 101 The States of Consciousness

Conscious awareness allows us to exert voluntary control over ourselves, but other states of consciousness also impact our actions, thoughts, and emotions. When faced with a difficult decision do you ever “ sleep on it”? When you remove something from awareness and your conscious mind, how does your unconscious help you deliberate and arrive at a decision?

By the end of this discussion, you will be able to:

  • Describe the two levels of cognitive processing
  • Explain the effects of various drugs on consciousness. In your reading you have learned about different states of consciousness. Awake and alert, awake and daydreaming, sleeping and anesthetized are some of the most common. If consciousness may be altered by chemical means such as anti-depressants, sleeping pills or alcohol, where do you think consciousness resides? What is the evidence to support your idea? Can our brain be aware of something that we are not conscious of? Is there evidence to support this? What is that evidence? Must be 250 words
