1. Achebe and Senghor both share what the textbook calls on page 1563 a “dual inheritance”; both were raised with and seek to unite two cultural communities. How does Achebe’s short story and ONE of Senghor’s poems seek to create what Achebe calls “a sense of shared national identity”? Use specific passages from each text in your response.

Head’s story “The Deep River” ends with the importance of names: “And the name Talaote was all they were to retain of their identity.” Achebe’s story also indicates the importance of naming: the main character has three names. How do names relate to identity in the literature of this topic? Where do we see similar themes in one of Senghor’s poems? Give examples from the texts to support your point.
3 In regards to Senghor’s poem “To New York,” it seems that Part I is about Manhattan, and Part II is about Harlem. What is the speaker’s opinion about Manhattan in Part I, and about Harlem in Part II? Do you think he reaches a verdict about the two areas and delivers it to the city of New York in Part III?
