Formatting and Essay Form Issues:

1) Essays are to be typed on a word processor and handed to the instructor. No e-mailed papers without prior approval from instructor, please.

2) The required paper size is 8.5 x 11 inches. The acceptable font sizes are Times New Roman, 12 point or Calibri, 11 point. The ink color should be black. The acceptable paper color is white.

3) The essay should be double-spaced without additional line spacing between paragraphs or between the heading and the essay’s text.

4) The first page should have a heading consisting of the student’s name, the instructor’s name, the course and the section number/letters (ENGL101.___), the date, and the assignment type. The heading must be in the upper left corner. No cover sheets, staples, nor paper clips are suggested, please.

5) Each page should have its number in the upper right hand corner, including page #1.

Persuasion Essay

6) The title of your essay, either direct or indirect, should be centered at the top of the front page under your heading information. The title must be written correctly, without underlining, without quotation marks (unless you employ a direct title in connection with your own), and with the correct capitalization. (Note: You should put within quotations marks the title of the King work which you are referencing if you are using the same in connection with your own title.)

7) Please eliminate any “widows” or “orphans” which might appear in your work.

8) The essay’s word count should be at least 850-1200 words. Kindly insert by typing the word count of your essay at the bottom left of your last page.

9) Please begin your introduction with the formal Aristotelian definition of persuasion. You should able to find this formal definition on the Internet. Searching for “Aristotle’s Three Means of Persuasion” usually yields this important definition. It should be approximately one to three sentences: “The modes of persuasion….”

10) Please cast your traditional five-paragraph essay whereas your controls are “logos,” “pathos,” and “ethos.” This ensures that paragraphs #2, #3, and #4 each deals which “logos,’ “pathos,” and “ethos,” respectively. You might provide for your reader a formal definition of these ideals, also. Please use and the handout uploaded to Blackboard for your definitions.

11) Please mention the “pathos-laden” 300-word long sentence in the appropriate “pathos” paragraph. Also, please remember to mention that the conditions listed therein contain the “parade of horribles” rhetorical device. There are also other examples of pathos in the document. Please tell the reader where these can be found.

12) In your “logos” paragraph, please inform the reader how King’s position is logical. Mention, please, his “inductive reasoning” strategy wherein he talks about the need to proceed with the idea: “in any non-violent campaign there are “four basic steps.” (Inductive reasoning involves narrow “step-by-step” elements needed to arrive at a larger aim / conclusion.) This is found early in the “Letter from Birmingham Jail.” Please include other examples of logical thought contained in the work.

13) In the “ethos” paragraph describe for the reader how Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. is “Christ-like” in his tone, demeanor, or/and attitude towards his detractors (the eight white

clergymen). This is gleaned inter-linearly (in between the lines) in the document and also directly in what he writes in this letter. Please point out other examples of “credibility” in the “Letter from Birmingham Jail. “ Also,

Dr. King wrote this famous essay during an Easter Sunday lock-up. Easter celebrates Christ’s persecution, crucifixion, and His resurrection. Draw the parallels with Dr. King and his being Christ-like during the Easter weekend of 1963. Understand?
