Discuss Your Persuasive Topic and Thesis
What is a required chat?
You must complete and submit the chat assignment BEFORE you contact a teacher.
To complete a required chat assignment, you will have to read or research information, contact an English teacher/teacher assistant in chat, and discuss the information. You will be expected to have completed the requirements for the chat before you contact a teacher. The teacher will ask specific questions to verify that you have completed the assignment requirements before giving you a grade. The required chat assignment counts as a homework grade.
Here is a refresher of the directions for the persuasive speech.
Choose one of the following topics:
Bullying / Violence
Animal cruelty
Environment
Human rights
Homelessness / Poverty
Narrow the topic. See page two of this lesson for help with that.
Write a thesis.
Develop a rough outline.
Research. Find information that will be useful in persuading your audience. Be sure to write down where you find the information.
Write the first draft.
Create visual aids.
Practice your speech and get feedback.
Revise your speech. Create the final draft and record your speech.
Submit your text, vocal delivery, visual aids, and evaluation.
What are the requirements of this assignment?

You have narrowed your speech topic and written your thesis statement. For this assignment, you will discuss the topic and thesis statement with an English teacher/teacher assistant. Be prepared to ask and answer questions regarding your topic and thesis statement.
You have completed the prewriting lesson where you chose a topic, brainstormed, analyzed your audience, and organized the information. The final item in that lesson is to write a tentative, or working, thesis statement. You are working on narrowing a topic while keeping purpose and audience in mind. For this assignment, you will discuss the topic and thesis statement with an English teacher/teacher assistant. Be prepared to ask and answer questions regarding your topic, your prewriting, and your thesis statement. Use this opportunity to ask other questions you might have about your speech assignment.
How do I complete the assignment?
You must complete and submit the chat assignment BEFORE you contact a teacher.
Complete the requirements for the assignment in preparation for the chat. Submit your response BEFORE you contact a teacher.
Open a chat with any English teacher or English teacher assistant.
Explain that you are ready to complete a required chat. Tell your name, course, and chat title.
Initiate the conversation by giving the topic for the paper and your thesis statement.
Complete any other requirements in your conversation with your teacher/teacher assistant. Be prepared to ask and answer questions.
During the chat, your teacher will make sure you have submitted the assignment containing your topic and thesis. The teacher will give you a grade at the end of the chat based on your summary, your conversation, and your ability to answer the questions related to the chat requirements. |
