This course examines works of literature dealing overtly with illness and healing, works by physicians and other caregivers, and works that raise questions about ethical behavior in the face of sickness.

Final Project: Choose a topic and write a 7- 9 page paper (or appropriate project) which will be due the last day of class and will be worth 2 grades. For this paper you are to pick an idea or set of ideas discussed at some point during the semester (Illness, caregivers, and healing) and develop an extended discussion or analysis of a literary text of your choice but do NOT use the books we discussed in class. (Williams Carlos Williams The Doctor Stories, Margaret Atwood A Handmade’s Tale, Ken Kesey One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, William Faulkner As I Lay Dying) I strongly recommend you choose an issue or idea and your supporting material based on your personal interests and knowledge.
