Finding Joe

Finding Joe

Watch ‘Finding Joe,’ here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OkIb2FKEoVM , and state the film’s thesis.

Then, summarize a main concept, story, myth, or message that rang true to you.

Write a response paragraph (or two) that expresses why you agree with this idea and develop it with support from outside the film. Cite your sources. As always, organize your responses using the TRIAC pattern of paragraph organization.

Use this template as an example:

The film argues that “……………” (describe the film’s claim)

Summary – One story from the film was the Tiger among Sheep. In this story, a baby tiger ……(summarize story) …

T – The meaning of the story is stated, ‘If you are tiger living among sheep, then you are a pretty poor specimen of a tiger.’ The moral of the story rang true to me.

R – In other words, most of us don’t understand our true selves because our society actively prevents us from doing so.

I – For example, images of success are … (McDonald, 2018)

I – Also, schools teach us to …. (Smith, 2011)

I – Moreover, companies advertise alcohol and drugs that….. (Johannsen, 2017)

A – These examples show how society distracts us from understanding our true nature, our true selves. If we do develop an understanding of our true inner nature and follow it, we are able to live more naturally, more productively, and more confidently.

C – So, the parable of the tiger among sheep made a lot of sense to me.

TRIAC PATTERN:

Using TRIAC to create effective body paragraphs.

Students often wonder what information to include in an academic paragraph and how best to organize that information. Many academic writers agree that an effective body paragraph should follow a specific pattern called the TRIAC writing pattern. To illustrate, effective paragraphs should follow this pattern:

Topic sentence – The topic sentence presents the one main idea that focuses and guides the paragraph much like a thesis statement focuses and guides the essay. This should directly support the thesis statement.

Restriction/Explanation – The second part of the body paragraph should restate or explain the topic sentence more specifically, and let the reader the direction the paragraph will go.(Common transitions:In other words, More specifically, In fact)

Illustration – The third part of the body paragraph supports the topic sentence using expert opinion, statistics, examples, evidence, personal experience, and facts.(common transitions:For example, For instance, To illustrate)

Analysis – The fourth part answers the question ‘why are these examples important?’ by interpreting and explaining how the evidence supports the topic sentence.*Though extremely important, students often leave analysis out of body paragraphs, which decreases the effectiveness of the paragraph.Illustrations should not be left without explanation or interpretation. (Common transitions:These examples show…, This is important because…, This means that…)

Concluding sentence – The final section of an effective body paragraph reviews the main ideas in the paragraph and reemphasizes what the evidence and analysis suggest.(Common transitions:So, Ultimately, As a result…)

This means that by following this pattern, students can produce clearly organized body paragraphs that effectively express their ideas. So, for strong academic body paragraphs, students should follow the TRIAC pattern of organization.
