Margaret Mead, “The Changing Significance of Food” and Barbara Kingsolver, “You Can’t Run Away on Harvest Day”

“The Changing Significance of Food” and Barbara Kingsolver, “You Can’t Run Away on Harvest Day”–come from Chapter 2 of Food Matters, “What Does It Mean to Eat Ethically?”

In the introduction to Chapter 4, Bauer stresses the point that what we eat, to a certain degree, is a moral choice or act. She raises questions that the authors in this chapter will address (198): What are our ethical responsibilities when we make food choices? Does it matter morally what we choose to eat? What does it mean to eat ethically? What moral principles should guide our food choices and ways of eating?

Discussion Posting: Mead, “The Changing Significance of Food” and Kingsolver, “You Can’t Run Away on Harvest Day”

Discussion Prompt:

Mead and Kingsolver have written two very different texts regarding their ethics of food and/or eating. While Mead provides a historical overview of our relationship with food, how it has changed over time, and how we can make an impact on world hunger, Kingsolver offers a personal account of her and her family’s experiences slaughtering and eating animals on their farm. What is each author’s primary ethical concern regarding food consumption? Despite their different writing styles/approaches, do any points of similarities exist (if yes, what are they)? In your response, make sure to include specific references to both texts by summarizing, paraphrasing, and/or quoting.
