Imagery and Metaphor

Imagery refers to the use of vivid descriptions that appeal to the senses. When writers use language that can be heard, touched, smelled, and tasted, they create a world their readers can enter.

Part 1: Select a poem from the ENG318: Creative Writing: Week One Recommended Poetry Resources (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. PDF or one from the text that appeals to you as a reader. Try to select a poem that has not already been discussed by one of your classmates. Read the poem aloud three times. Then, in your initial post

  • Identify the ways in which this poem evokes sensory experiences (e.g., sight, smell, taste, touch, and/or sound).
  • Analyze how these sensory experiences work to reveal the poem’s themes.
  • Discuss how metaphors and figurative language work to engage readers by showing, not telling.

Explain your view with details from the poem’s language. Support your claims with examples from required material(s) and/or other scholarly sources, and use APA format to properly cite your sources. Your post should be at least 250 words in length.

Part 2: Create a list of 20 original images from your own mind/environment/experience of no more than three words each (excluding articles). For example, these images were created from William Carlos Williams’s poem, “The Red Wheelbarrow”: “a red wheelbarrow,” “glazed with rainwater,” and “beside the white chickens.”

Respond to at least two of your classmates’ posts by Day 7. Each required response to classmates must meet or exceed 150-300 words. In your responses, you may choose to focus on your peers’ readings of the selected poems or you may choose to focus on their lists of images. You may also choose to respond to both. Be sure to use specific references to particular lines, phrases, or words that you wish to address. Remember, it is not about whether or not you like something, but rather how and why it works or does not work.
