This week’s readings on the Truman Doctrine, NSC 68, Walter Lippman’s Critique of Containment, and Joseph McCarthy on the Attack all illustrate the growing fear of Americans towards the influence of Soviet communism. Why do some of these documents say it is necessary to combat communism on the world stage? What is an argument against this policy of “containment” and how did this fear of communism come to affect Americans at home?
