Timer
0:00-9:04: Watch, then pause. Matthew Collings starts with the statement “Art IS life.”
1. Now that you have listened to his comments, what do you think he means ?

0:00-5:30: 2. How does Egyptian Art differ from Greek Art?
3. Why did the Greeks want their art to depict humans in
a very life-like presentation?
4. Why did Greek art change so quickly, unlike the Egyptian art which changed so slowly?

5:30-8:15 After the Kouroi figures, first the Archaic and then the Classical, we see the rapid development of
narrative friezes on the Parthenon. The self-awareness inherent in the sculptural friezes asks the question
“What can society be?” The Greeks, through their self-questioning, examined both human feelings and
their ability to reason. Through this process, the Greeks developed democracy, rule by the people.
It is the Greek ideal “perfection of the individual” that has set a standard for the West
quite unlike the accent on the group which is generally the standard in the East.
5. Where can we see evidence of Greek influences in the United States of America,

in art, science, politics and religion?
