Developing a Community Reading Responses

These responses/reflections (one-two page) are not simply summaries of the articles or lectures but include each student’s own perspective, what was unique or valuable, and concerns the student might have with the application in practice. No late submissions will be accepted. RESPONSES MAY NOT BE SOLELY ABOUT A PATTERN.

Demonstrate careful reading, synthesize what you learned, and apply those lessons to a relevant, everyday experience. The best responses have personal stories tied to the reading/lecture material.

Avoid referring to “the readings” or “the assignment” or casually referencing an author that hasn’t been introduced.
Avoid personal qualifiers (ex: “I think…”) but do use personal experience as evidence to support your point (ex: “when I walked through Falling Water I felt..”).
Bibliography of the sources in your essay at the end of your essay. Citations in the essay for quotes or main ideas taken from sources. Always introduce your source. All readings in the bibliography.
When introducing sources include the full title and the author’s full names. Titles of books are underlined or italicized and titles of journal articles are enclosed in double quotations.
The essay must have an introduction, body, and conclusion.
Avoid passive tense (as yourself who is doing the action on what)… for more information visit Grammar Girl or Quick and Dirty Tips.
Avoid switching between points of view (1st person, 2nd person, 3rd person)…
It should be at least 500 words.
