Whether or not democratization is the solution to regional and national instability is a matter of debate. Some may argue that democracy provides stability to those regions or nations experiencing political or social conflict. Others may argue that it would only cause more conflict. Western nations have a stake in promoting democracy in order to encourage other nations to develop like-minded democratic principles. Those principles include free and fair elections, representative government, and equal rights for all. In some regions and nations, there are unique factors that might impact the democratization process.
For this Assignment, you examine differing perspectives on the promotion of democracy and make your argument for or against the promotion of democracy in a region of the world or nation.
- Review Chapter 17 in the course text, Controversies in Globalization: Contending Approaches to International Relations. Think about positive and negative aspects of promoting democracy in nondemocratic regions or nations. Focus on how democratic processes impact the promotion of democracy.
- Review the interactive map and select a case scenario related to democratization.
- Consider factors that might impact the democratization process in the scenario you selected.
- Think about arguments for and against the promotion of democracy in the global community.
Assignment must be 1-2 pages and include
1. A brief description of the case scenario you selected from the global map timeline
2. Explain two factors that might impact democratization in that region of the world or nation.
3. Make an argument for or against the promotion of democracy in the region of the world or nation in the case scenario. Be specific and make at least two concrete points to support your argument.
