An organizational development (OD) practitioner needs to determine methods for gathering information about the organization’s current state, particularly its goals and the issues it is facing. The process of understanding a system’s current function is called diagnosis.

Diagnosis is a collaborative process involving the consultant, the managers, and possibly other stakeholders. Diagnosis may be used for problem solving, situational analysis, discovery for future enhancements, etc. The goal of diagnosis and assessment is to provide an intervention strategy and a plan that will enhance the organization and assist it in reaching its stated goals.
