The prominent America sociologist Talcott Parsons was among the earliest and most influential thinkers to develop a comprehensive theory of social systems—significantly impacting other prominent systems theorists such as his student Niklas Luhmann. Parsons sociological systems theory took the form of a theory of social action. According to Luhmann, Parsons entire theoretical framework represents the working out of one central thesis: that “action is system.” What does this mean? Is Parsons central thesis correct? And, more generally, does it seem like systems thinking can be fruitfully extended beyond biological and cybernetic systems to human action and the social sphere? Why or why not?
