Some effective reading strategies that were in our textbook are the SQ3R method. That stands for Survey, Question, Read, Recite, and Review.Survey is becoming familiar with your reading, it should take about 5 minutes.Question is formulating questions about the material, should take about 10 to 15 seconds. Read, you are actively searching for answers, make notes, and read the end.Recite, you look away and answer questions about the reading.Review, look over everything ASAP, mainly within 24 hours. Also write summary flash cards (VanderMey, Meyer, Rys, & Sebranek, 2015).Other reading strategies include (1) pace yourself- read 30-45 minutes followed by short breaks, (2) anticipate- think about what is coming next, (3) read difficult parts aloud, (4) take notes – find a note-taking system, and (5) annotate the text -highlight key points (VanderMey, Meyer, Rys, & Sebranek, 2015).This article was talking about my situation. It states adult learners are less effective in their learning than the normal college-age learners (Zhang, V.,2011) This is so true.I have a son in Amherst College. His papers are so much better than mine.It also states that the reading strategies are different depending on what type of learner you are (Zhang, Y. 2011).This is so true because me as an adult learner have it harder than a younger person.

There were several effective reading strategies given. It was also mentioned that reading and writing are intertwined with one another. This was important because the two have always gone hand and hand. There is a rhetoric guide to reading, writing, and thinking. The fact that it takes 10 to 15 seconds to formulate a question. It is important to take notes and have an understanding on what topic you want to talk about. You also have to use mapping to have a visual of the notes and material that you are speaking of. One important thing that was discussed was SQ3R. This is survey, question, read, recite, and review. This was something that was new to me. However, I took it to mean first survey the material or topic. Formulate questions about the material or topic. Read the complete material and then recite it again, and lastly, review it all. I find that people often look for strategies to save time and this normally is previewing the material to get an overview or idea without actually reading the entire body of work. Another strategy would be to skim or scan over the material, but to get a true understanding it would require intensive reading. It is also important to pay attention to grammar and punctuation. You have to avoid run on sentences as well. The effective strategies should be helpful in the preparation and aid you in the best practice for a successful research.
