Each reflection paper will be at least one page long (maximum length is 3 pages), address a particular issue or problem that we have discussed in class and is expected to show your skills in critical analysis. You are supposed to summarize the debates on a specific issue/problem for each reflection paper and then present your own position in that debate. A rubric is attached and the essay topics are attached.
Answer any one of the following questions:
- How successful is the United Nations in promoting human rights? Please answer the question refereeing to its contribution to all three groups of rights-‘civil and political rights’, ‘social economic, and cultural rights’, ‘solidarity rights’. You are expected to critically analyze the challenges the UN faces in performing its duties as a promoter and guardian of these rights and the innovations that it comes up with to meet those challenges.
- What is ‘sustainable development’? Should we sacrifice our lifestyle in the USA to help mitigate environmental degradation in other parts of the world and promote sustainable development for everyone?
- Should the United States intervene in other countries to promote democracy? Answer the question in light of the growing norm of ‘Responsibility to protect’ and the evolution of ‘human rights’. (your courseware talks about Responsibility to Protect)
