Case Conceptualization

need help with case conceptualization

Case Conceptualization Upon the completion of the role play, students are required to turn in a case conceptualization of their family. You will be required to analyze the family problem and write-up a case conceptualization and suggested treatment plan, discussing the roles of each family member and of the therapist in the definitions of “the problem” and “the solution.” This reflection paper should include:

  • a brief description of the presenting problems,
  • the roles/rules/perspective of each family member in regard to the presenting problem,
  • a conceptual understanding of the presenting problem (using a chosen theory),
  • a discussion of the interventions that occurred during the role play,
  • why the intervention were successful and/or what barriers existed, and
  • any larger cultural/narrative and ecological factors
  1. General Conceptualization: General and Familial Systemic Conceptualization (+10)
    1. The student is able (as information is given) to identify intra-familial dynamics, including (if appropriate):
  1. Ecology: Analysis of ecology
    1. Identification of the ecosystems outside of the microsystem:
  1. Diversity: Identification of Racial/Ethnic/Community Variables (language, group identification, religion, values, attitudes, attributions and customs, historical events), with generation of initial hypotheses as to the influence and impact on the family system and the individual.
  1. Intervention: Identification of resources needed for successful intervention.
    1. Inclusion of the following into assessment:
  1. Theory: Student’s ability to apply theories to the cases and recommend interventions that are specific to those theories.
    1. Integration of theoretical orientations into case conceptualization, demonstrating both knowledge of theories and their applicability to the case
    2. possible strategies for collaboration re: treatment with other disciplines
    3. Specific interventions are highlighted and driven from the theoretical understanding
  1. Ethics: Ethical and Legal Concerns
    1. Identification and strategizing around possible issues of confidentiality, informed consent, mandated reporter, duty to warn
    2. Identification of possible issues with the therapist (countertransference, attitudes, history) that may negatively impact therapy and the therapeutic relationship and how those might be addressed.
