Book II and IV of plato’s republic

Book II and IV of plato’s republic

1.1. At the beginning of Book II of Plato’s Republic, Socrates says that there are three kinds of good and that Justice is the best of those three kinds of good. Explain the three kinds of good and what reasons Socrates gives for saying Justice must be the best kind. Is Socrates right? Why or why not? You should be careful to set out Socrates’ account of the three kinds of good carefully.

2. 2. In Book II of Plato’s Republic, Socrates says that in order to understand justice in a single person he will try to examine justice in a whole city. Is he right that we can study justice in a single person in this way? Why or why not? You should be familiar with the discussion that precedes this in Book II of Republic regarding what is needed to show that it is better for someone to be just than unjust, and also what is said in defence of this claim in Book IV.
