Much of the political power struggles that existed in 16th century England centered on a piece of literature – the Bible. As the English grappled over who should read, interpret, and transcribe the book, and which version should be used, England plunged into turmoil. From this week’s reading, cite one example of the controversy surrounding the interpretation of the book. What were people arguing about, and why? What effect did the controversy have on England? In your opinion, does this example of controversy concerning the interpretation of the Bible continue today? Support your answer with examples from history or from contemporary society.

Paradise Lost – Reading for Character and Imagery

Imagery is the collection of words that together create a picture, or image that appeals to our visual senses.

Read the required section of Milton’s Paradise Lost. Identify one character from Paradise Lost and find imagery associated with that character. What recurrent motifs are you able to find? Explain how the recurrent imagery is used to convey meaning about the character. Be sure to quote from the story and explain how the imagery you have chosen proves your point about character. Try to find images and/or links that have not already been used by your fellow classmates.
