Read the following book chapter:
Trevino, L. and Brown, M. (2005). The Role of Leaders in Influencing Unethical Behavior in the Workplace. In R.E. Kidwell and C.L. Martin (Eds.) Managing Organizational Deviance (pp. 69-96). California: Sage Publications.
You will be addressing Case Study #3, Bernard Ebbers: Innovative Leader or Reckless Risk Taker, beginning on page 89. Once you are familiar with the case, address the case questions presented on page 95, following the case.

1. To what extent were the actions of Bernard Ebbers indicative of leadership, and to what extent did Ebbers display destructive deviant behavior? Provide examples of leadership and deviant behavior from the case.
2. How did Ebbers influence his managers and employees to engage in deviant unethical behavior? How could he have used his influence and leadership style to avoid deviant behavior among subordinates?
3. Identify some theoretical linkages between Ebbers’s leadership style as practiced and the behavior that occurred within WorldCom.
4. The law firm report identified Ebbers as the source of a culture that resulted in the company’s accounting fraud. How did Ebbers’s leadership style contribute to the values and actions of key managers? How could key managers perform their jobs effectively and ethically in the WorldCom culture?
5. Consider the characteristics of the ethical leader described in Chapter 3. How does such a leader encourage ethical behavior among managers and employees and, at the same time, obtain successful organizational results? Could Ebbers have used these characteristics to accomplish his goals at WorldCom? Explain.
Submit a paper which is 2- pages in length (no more than 2-pages), exclusive of the reference page. Paper should be double-spaced in Times New Roman font (or its equivalent) which is no greater than 12 points in size. The paper should cite at least 2 sources in APA format. One source can be the book chapter. The paper should be well-written. Check all content for grammar, spelling and to be sure that you have properly cited all resources (in APA format) used.

General Guidelines for Case Studies
A case study is a short description of a real business situation. Analyzing case studies gives you the opportunity to apply concepts you’re learning to real business problems. Cases are generally written for several types of analysis. Usually, there is not a “right or wrong” answer. Rather, cases provide a vehicle for you to demonstrate your understanding and ability to apply course concepts and theories. You must use appropriate sources (properly cited) to support your position. Check your analysis by assessing how well it demonstrates your subject knowledge. If your answer relies solely on your ‘impressions’ of the topic, it is likely that the analysis is not your best effort. Simply answering the questions which are part of the case is not enough; consider the questions to be clues to the important concepts and facts. You are strongly encouraged to use the following outline so that your analysis is organized appropriately:
1. Identify both the key issues and the underlying issues. In identifying the issues, you should be able to connect them to the business principles which apply to this situation.
2. Discuss the facts which affect these issues. The case may have too much information. In your discussion, you should filter the information and discuss those facts which are pertinent to the issues identified above.
3. Discuss your tentative solution to the problem and how you would implement your solution. What actions would you propose to respond to the situation, based on the knowledge you have gained in this course? You should draw on knowledge gained in your readings, experience and coursework (in this course and others) to support your response. Be sure to properly cite references in APA format. You should also draw on other references such as business periodicals and relevant journals. Remember that an analysis is more than simply a summary of the Case Study.
4. Discuss follow-up and contingency plans. How will the organization know that your proposed solution is working? What should they do if it does not work?
